Rose Tree Media School District vision is to use classroom technology to engage students in asking questions and choosing tools to facilitate real world problem solving. Instructional technology continues to expand as teachers continue to choose professional development options for integrating technology into student learning. Instructional technology has expanded in Rose Tree Media School District to include the collaborative classroom components of interactive whiteboards, classroom computers, laptop computer carts, and projectors. A Classrooms for the Future grant from PDE has enabled us to add almost $500,000 worth of 21st Century learning equipment to our high school classrooms over the past two years.
Electronic whiteboards facilitate active learning, not just passive reception of information. In situations where teachers use a whole-class approach, students are more engaged in the lesson when an interactive whiteboard is used. In addition, research shows teachers who have access to an interactive whiteboard are more likely to make creative and varied use of all the resources at their disposal (British Educational Communications and Technology Agency, 2004). Each school's wealth of technology resources helps transport students beyond the experiences that have been possible in a traditional classroom. All computers within the district are networked and have a high-speed connection to the Internet. This access, combined with interactive technologies and teacher web pages, make the use of online content an integral part of providing a superior education for our students. Educators and students have the opportunity to view educational videos over the Internet via video-on-demand services from the Delaware County Intermediate Unit through Discovery Education. Students and teachers throughout the school system make use of a number of library databases to conduct research.
To support the district's technology initiatives, Instructional Technology Coordinators are based in each school to assist teachers in developing teaching and learning strategies for technology use. Teachers participate in on-going professional development to experiment, initiate, and create new models of teaching and learning.
