Glenwood's educational program is designed to encourage children to develop to their full potential. We believe that parents are our partners and encourage their active participation in our school community. Over 450 students attend Glenwood for their kindergarten-to-grade five education.
Our basic curriculum includes instruction in language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, art, vocal music, and physical education. Children have the opportunity to participate in chorus and instrumental music instruction beginning in grade four.
Enrichment and independent study beyond the basic curriculum are available to students through the school district's Academically Gifted Program, Accelerated Math, the community's Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and Reading Olympics. Our reading and math enrichment programs help students meet and exceed the state standards.
Glenwood teachers sponsor over 20 before and after-school clubs primarily offered for 2nd through 5th grade students. These groups cover a variety of interests including music, sport movement activities, community involvement and academic.
Parent/teacher conferences are scheduled twice each year, and as requested. Students in grades four and five lead these conferences in the spring which allows them the opportunity to report their progress and have a conversation with their parents and teacher simultaneously. Progress reports, aligned to Pennsylvania State Standards, are issued three times a year in grades K – 5.
We encourage all parents to become involved in our active, supportive Parent-Teacher Group. Parents are invited to meet their child's teachers at Glenwood's August Open House, annual Back-to-School Night, or join us for Family Fun Nights, concerts, and special events throughout the year.
Glenwood has had a long-standing tradition of academic excellence. In 1990, both the Pennsylvania and the United States Departments of Education designated Glenwood Elementary School as a Blue Ribbon School. From 2001 through 2015 the students of Glenwood have performed well above the Pennsylvania State average on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment Exam.
The Glenwood School is being updated. During the summers of 2008 and 2009 renovations included a new computer lab, two music suites for instrumental lessons, a new leveled book room, an elevator, twelve updated classrooms (k-2) and student bathrooms. In the summer of 2013 and 2014 the intermediate wing (grades 3-5) and Large Group Room were renovated. Every classroom in the building has a SMART board and each classroom has five laptops for our students to use. In 2015 we received 75 additional student computers.
