Jazz Lab is the novice ensemble that introduces jazz music to incoming 6th graders with the idea that those members feed into the 7th and 8th Grade Jazz Band. It is also open to 7th and 8th grade members who either cannot rehearse with the Jazz Band at night or would just like to play in a jazz ensemble. We practice on Thursday afternoons from 3 to 4 after school. You must be approved for Jazz Lab. All wind players must know the fundamentals on their instruments. You must be able to read music and be able to play your notes and rhythms as in your concert band books (5th grade - Sound Innovations, 6th & 7th grades - Standard of Excellence). Piano players must be able to read piano music at a decent level. Guitar players should at least know how to play chords and read chord diagrams. If guitar players can read music and play written notation, great! However, at this age level, most guitar players have a hard time with that. If you want to play guitar in the 7th and 8th grade jazz ensemble, you must learn how to do both chords and written notation. Lessons are encouraged. Bass players have to be able to read written notation. TAB is not enough. All approved members must fill out this form and submit payment for the book...or you can purchase it on your own - Standard of Excellence Jazz Ensemble.
You will be notified if you are approved.
