BOSSY R (ar, er, ir, or, ur)

When r stands next to any vowel he bosses each one around by telling them what sound to make. Bossy r is polite in that he lets the vowel go first.

 

 -tch SPELLING RULE

Use -tch at the end of a 1 syllable word

Exceptions - much, such, rich which

 

/k/ SPELLING RULE -

Use c at the beginning of a word that is followed by the short a sound (cat, cab.)

Use k at the beginning of a word that is followed by the short i sound (kit, kid.)

Use ck at the end of one syllable words (pack, lick.)

 

DOUBLE STUFF RULE -

Double the following letters at the end of a one syllable word     -ff, -ss, -zz, -ll

(off, pass, jazz, hill)
Some Exceptions - is, has, was, quiz, pal

Beginning Consonant Blends - 2 sounds blended together at the beginning of a word.
