    Public Participation at Board Meetings

Public comment at monthly School Board and Work Sessions is another way to connect with the School Board. However, please note that board meetings are meetings in public rather than public meetings. Consequently, all discussions and debates regarding agenda items are restricted to the members of the Board and the Superintendent.

Work Sessions are open to the public, and the Board may receive comments on agenda items from attendees. These meetings allow the Board to perform its responsibilities to the District. Depending on the agenda items and length, the Board may request that community members follow up with further comments or concerns via email.

The Board welcomes public comment during Legislative Meetings on agenda items or other resident concerns. The Public Comment period is designated on the agenda as "Unscheduled Presentations.”

A community member who wishes to address the Board during a Legislative Meeting may do so under the following guidelines:

    • Unscheduled speakers are allowed a maximum of three minutes to address the Board. Scheduled presentations, arranged in advance with the Board Secretary, are limited to five minutes. To request time for a scheduled presentation, please contact Dr. Vanessa Scott, Board secretary, at vscott@rtmsd.org at least 24 hours before the Legislative meeting.
    • To address the Board during a Legislative Meeting, participants must sign-up at the beginning of the meeting and include their name, address (in case follow-up is needed), and topic of concern. A sign-up sheet will be made available at the entrance to the auditorium prior to the meeting.
    • Speakers must state their name, township/borough of residence, and topic of discussion.
    • Speakers are discouraged from attacking board members, administrators, employees, community members, or any public present.
    • Although the Board may respond to comments during this period, there is no discussion between the public and the Board during the meeting. The Board may refer a comment to an administrator who can answer appropriately in follow-up communication. No participant may address or question individual Board members or the Superintendent.
